Alcohol Pen Technique
August 27, 2022 /Welcome to our Totally Techniques Blog Hop! I’m Angela McFarlane from Gold Coast, Australia.
Each month our team chooses a different technique to feature and this month we will be showcasing Alcohol Pen Techniques.
There’s lots of different way to use your Stampin’ Blends other than for colouring.
Today I’m sharing a fun background technique that I created with Stampin’ Blends Markers that was inspired by Tami Hewlett.
In case you haven’t noticed, I really love using ‘blue’ on a lot of my cards and I thought the new in-colours of Tahitian Tide and Starry Sky would work well with the snowflakes for my Christmas theme.
At the end of my blog please ‘hop along’ to see all the different ideas for using your alcohol markers made by our talented team!
Did you know that Stampin’ Blends Markers are alcohol based and they don’t mix with water?
Always use a high percentage alcohol such as Isocol Rubbing alcohol that you can get at the supermarket or chemist.
Stampin’ Blends are great for lots of fun techniques, such as blending on acetate and spritzing with alcohol or blending on vellum.
Thanks to Tammi, I discovered you can use them on standard cardstock for the following technique. I used ‘Shimmery White’ to add a touch of sparkle to my card.
Step 1The brush end of the markers works better for this technique as you can make long, wide flowing strokes. I used Starry Sky and Tahitian Tide Stampin’ Write Markers to create the ombre pattern on Shimmery White Cardstock.
I went from darkest to lightest and first used Dark Starry Sky at the bottom of my card, then added the Light Starry Sky, Dark Tahitian Tide, and Light Tahitian Tide.
When changing to the next colour, I overlapped the previous colour by a brush stroke or two which helped with blending and to create an ombre effect.
Step 2I poured a few drops of Isocol Rubbing Alcohol into the cap and used a Water Painter to add small drops to the paper, by hitting the barrel to create splatter.
The larger drops are created by holding the brush vertically and touching the tip to the paper.
Step 3I simply repeated this process until I was happy with the result and added large drops on the sides to help blend the edges.
I didn’t put the alcohol in the barrel, I just dipped the tip of the brush and this worked very well. Using a high alcohol percentage helps this technique work best.
Step 4I simply repeated this process until I was happy with the result and added large drops on the sides to help blend the edges.
I didn’t put the alcohol in the barrel, I just dipped the tip of the brush and this worked very well. Using a high alcohol percentage helps this technique work best.
Step 5I die cut the smallest snowflakes using ‘Snowy White Velvet Sheets’ for added texture and Iridescent Pearls to finish it off.
Step 6I layered the card on a Starry Sky Mat and on a Shimmery White card base.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this fun technique and try it soon!

Masking Technique
July 30, 2022 /Welcome to our Totally Techniques Blog Hop! I’m Angela McFarlane from Gold Coast, Australia.
Each month our team chooses a different technique to feature and this month we will be showcasing the Masking Technique.
There are a few ways to mask your objects and I’ll share two ways on my project today.
I’ll be masking from the fore ground and working back as well as masking to create some colour blocking. At the end of my blog please ‘hop along’ to see all the different projects made by our talented team!
I chose the fun Sale-A-Bration FREE stamp set ‘Hippest Hippos’ as I thought it would be a fun stamp set to play with.
Step 1First, I stamped a few hippos on my Stampin’ Up! Masking Paper, then fussy cut them.
I ended up doing 3 as I needed them all, as you’ll see later.
Step 2I then re-stamped the hippo image on my card front in the position where I wanted to start.
Step 3I placed my first mask to entirely cover my first stamped hippo, then re-stamped the second hippo slightly overlapping the first one.
Step 4I repeated the process and covered the second hippo and stamped the third one, once again overlapping the second hippo.
Step 5Then I masked the third hippo and cut a full sheet of masking paper in half, peeled off the backing and stuck it over the top of the ‘masked’ hippos.
This is to mask out the section where I didn’t want colour to go. This will create a colour block as the highlight – spotlight.
I’m trying to create the effect that the hippos are dancing on a stage.
Step 6Then I used my blending brush with So Saffron ink and blended the entire area, this was to create a spotlight. The hippos are protected from the colour as they are also masked.
Step 7The magic is revealed once all the masks are removed.
I can re-use the masking paper that I used on the sides, simply by sticking the backing back on – it won’t go to waste as it’s still tacky enough to re-use.
Step 8I then coloured the hippos in Melon Mambo, Smokey Slate, Gray Granite, Pool Party and Petal Pink
Step 9I added a Melon Mambo strip inside the card, stamped a different hippo and added a splash of colour to the flower and nails.
I also decorated the envelope as this will be perfect Happy Mail to send out soon.
Step 10To finish off the card, I added an embossed layer using the ‘Into The Clouds’ Embossing Folder.
I die cut the cute umbrella and glasses using the matching FREE dies.
I also used a splash of wink of stella on the umbrella and Melon Mambo Glossy Dots Assortment embellishments for a little bit of bling.
I hope you’ve enjoyed my masking techniques

Paper Piecing Technique
June 25, 2022 /Welcome to the Totally Techniques Blog Hop!
I’m Angela McFarlane from Gold Coast, Australia.
Each month our team chooses a different technique to feature and this month we will be showcasing the Paper Piecing Technique. This is quite a simple but fun technique to add a pop of colour to your projects.
Basically, you stamp your image on DSP, fussy cut it out then glue it onto another stamped image. Check out the process below.
At the end of my blog please ‘hop along’ to see all the different projects made by our talented team!
I chose the ‘In The Moment’ stamp set for my card because it has large images suitable for this technique and I’ve just had a lovely break away in Tassie visiting family and friends.
The sentiment in this set made me realise that’s just what I needed – a nice break and some time to relax.
Step 1I chose a piece of Awash In Beauty DSP to stamp the image for my paper piecing.
I will be using the DSP for the hat, dress and wine in the glass. Notice the colour of the wine?
I enjoy a Merlot or Shiraz 😉
Step 2I fussy cut – yes using scissors – the dress, hat and wine out of the stamped image on my DSP.
Try to cut inside the stamped lines as you will later glue the ‘paper pieced’ part onto another re-stamped image on your final piece – it’s sort of needs to fit like a jig saw puzzle.
I used very vanilla card stock, cut out with a stitched rectangle die and stamped my final image using Memento Black ink.
Step 3Then I used my blending brush and Blamy Blue ink to add some background colour to my feature piece. I then glued (using Tombo) the ‘paper pieced’ parts onto the stamped image.
The Take Your Pick Tool was very handy for the small hat and wine to help position it in place correctly.
Step 4I coloured the hair, arms and table using Stampin’ Blends before attaching the feature onto a slightly larger Very Vanilla Stitched Rectangle.
Step 5The Gingham Textured Embossing Folder adds some texture to the Blushing Bride card stock on the second layer.
Step 6I stamped the greeting, attached a piece of White Frayed ribbon -cut in half lengthways and popped on some dimensionals.
Step 7The card is finished off with a little bit of bling using the Iridescent Rhinestones.
I hope you’ve enjoyed my Paper Piecing card and feel inspired to have a play.
